Dave Mackay
Died yesterday.

I know he was an ex Spurs player but his autobiography is a really good read.

Great player.

Re: Dave Mackay
One of the very greatest players I've ever seen. Everyone is on about his hardness, but he had phenomenal skill.

Eddy Bailey said, when Hoddle arrived, He's the most skillful I've seen here since Mackay. Jimmy Greaves - He was the best I played with at Spurs. Denis Law - The best Scottish player of my time was Dave Mackay. George Best - the hardest opponent I ever faced. Brian Clough knew who he needed to get Derby going when he took over as manager.

There really were giants in those days (ironically, DM was about 5' 8").

If he had said that in front of Kevin Kilbane he would have made him cry and been up on a charge.....football has gone soft.

Re: Dave Mackay
My Dad told me he saw Mackay play for Spurs at Upton Park. He sad Mackay poleaxed a player right in front of him on the Chicken Run touch line.
A woman in front of my Dad shouted at Mackay calling him a "brute".
As Mackay got up to run off he looked her in the eyes and sad "Fuck off you ugly cow".
The woman turned and said to nobody in particular "well, that's charming."

What did Rory bremner do to him? A bad impression?

Re: Dave Mackay
He won the old First Division as a Spurs player and managed Derby to the same.
Besides Dalglish who was the last person to do that in the top English division?

I dont know just asking

He was a good man a great player, and a gentleman. I don't care what team a man has played for , people will remember men like this for stature and decency. When the likes of gascoine pop off he will probably be remembered as a fool .

Many colourful characters in those days !

Ooops.

Re: Dave Mackay
Exactly..... my point in a nutshell. Oh dear I used colour, black and white in one sentence so I must be a racist.... even though I was talking in the photographic sense!

The word "colour" is now deemed to be racist .. whoops I've said it

Re: Dave Mackay
That pic with bremner.

Mackay had jus come back from a broken leg, and bremner hit him blatantly on the same leg....hence the reaction.

Re: Dave Mackay
I think the introduction of colour into the world has ruined it. It was so much better in black & white...

Re: Dave Mackay
The thing with him and Bremner though is that in those days the ref would have said behave lads and get on with the game !!!!

Re: Dave Mackay
Tough player who was respected by others, managed Derby to title and let's not forget his place in tv history .. With Fletch holding up the paper in Porridge with headline 'Mackay Sacked'!!!

But Mullery should NOT have put Bobby Moore down when paying tribute ... Very poor.

RIP Dave Mackay.

He was one tough man and quite possibly the bandiest person ever to shuffle around the planet.

My old man said that he was one of the hardest cunts he's ever seen in the game... Must've been fucking tough then...

Achieved a lot - shame about the club that he played for...
